The History of Wallpapers.

Updated: Apr 12, 2019

Often these days wallpaper is merely seen as something colourful to cover the walls, which is a far cry from the early days of wallpaper where they were often bought by the middle classes as cheap mimics of other art forms, such as tapestries, painted cloth, leather hangings etc, found in the more sumptuous homes of the wealthy.

The earliest mention of wallpaper in Europe was in 1481, it was a document recording payment of wallpaper made for Louis XI. The paper was to be hung at the Royal Chateau of Plessis-Les-Tours.

The first known method of wallpaper printing, recorded as having been used as early as 1509. Prior to this plain paper was pasted to the wall and then hand drawn and coloured in by artists, which continued as the only 'real' means of printing wallpapers until the introduction of the 'printing machine' some 300 years later

William Morris is probably the most famous of all English wallpaper designers. He was an industrious man who skills as a wallpaper designer are unquestioned; his designs are still being produced today and are available to buy from Drew Decor Store, 910 Ecclesall Road, Sheffield, Sheffield's finest wallpaper and paint shop.

Anaglypta wallpaper was launched in 1887, probably the most famous of all wallcoverings, it was to prove a lasting and ever popular form of decoration that is still being manufactured and used to date, as it is embossed in such a way so as not to 'flatten out' again when pasted and hung. The name 'Anaglypta' is taken from the Greek, meaning 'raised cameo'. Throughout the decades Anaglypta has thrived by constantly adapting, adding to it's design archive to meet the changing demands of the time. Anaglypt is available from Drew Decor Store, 910 Ecclesall Road, Sheffield, a wallpaper and paint shop like no other.
